Two gorgeous accessible bathrooms for Paralympic wheelchair basketball athlete, Sophie Carrigill

Designed for independence and with a luxurious sense of style, Sophie Carrigill’s two gorgeously accessible bathrooms demonstrate the fusion of function and form that Fine & Able has become known for.

About Sophie

A Paralympic basketball player, Sophie has represented Team GB at the Rio and Tokyo Paralympics and hopes to be selected for Paris 2024. A full-time wheelchair user, Sophie lives in a two-storey house in Lancashire. When she moved in, the upstairs bathroom and en-suite did not meet her access needs or modern luxury style as the before photographs show. For example, she couldn’t get her knees under the basins because they were mounted on top of cabinets, and the small door openings to the shower cubicles required a “leap of faith" from her wheelchair onto a “pretty un-sturdy shower chair” every time she took a shower.

Finding Fine & Able

Sophie decorated the rest of her home in her personal style and added a platform lift, but her bathrooms were lagging behind. That was until she discovered Fine & Able on Instagram, and says of the bathrooms she saw us creating for other people with access needs:

I just thought they looked incredible. They're definitely my style of living in a little bit of luxury as I don't think just because you need something accessible that it should be anything less than a gorgeous bathroom.

The design process

Sophie enjoyed working with our accessible designer to create her dream bathroom. Together they discussed how she would use the spaces so that all the bathroom features could be positioned to make her life as easy as possible. She also loved getting to choose how she wanted the bathrooms to look and playing around with colour schemes and tile options, and says:

The consultation process was really fun. It was great that Fine & Able were fully on board with listening to what I needed and creating spaces that are as accessible and perfect for my needs as possible.

To help visualise designs, products, and finishes, the Fine & Able design service comes with full 3D renders and technical drawings. An example from Sophie's en-suite is below.

The design details

Sophie and her designer opted for consistency of accessible features across her two bathrooms including:

  • Wall-mounted basins and toilets
  • Matt black brassware throughout
  • Smart storage solutions – shower niches in contrasting tile finishes, niches beside the toilet in the en-suite for easy access to personal hygiene products, and integrated built-in shelving
  • Built-in tiled shower benches inspired by a visit to a luxury hotel and spa
  • Discreet shower screens
  • Neutral slip-resistant floor tiles

With two bathrooms to design, Sophie wanted each to have a unique look and feel. The Luminous Lume Green Gloss wall tiles laid in a herringbone pattern with white grout in the main bathroom were inspired by Sophie Morgan’s Fine & Able bathroom. In the en-suite subtle interest has been created by the tonally patterned Codec wall tiles in Cementine.

Sophie didn’t want to include grab rails in the designs as she doesn’t use them, but if she wanted to add them in future she could as some of the walls have been reinforced.

The final result

I would absolutely recommend Fine & Able to other disabled people as it's been such a straightforward process, and now the finished result is two amazing luxurious bathrooms that I love.
