Pretty in Pink: Accessible Bathroom Transformation

We recently transformed O's bathroom from cold, clinical and cluttered, to pretty, practical and full of personality.

O's bathroom before. Blue tiled and cluttered with open white shelving

A couple of years ago, O had her garage converted to make a wheelchair-accessible bathroom on the ground floor of her home.

Originally installed was a fairly off-the-shelf accessible bathroom. However, it quickly became apparent that the space didn’t work for O.

The room was poorly laid out despite it being a large room. It had dark and unused areas that did little except accumulate clutter. A rainwater shower was positioned in a way that made washing awkward. The sink had a pedestal that made it hard for her to pull her wheelchair underneath. There was a hinged rail beside the toilet that she never used and blocked the window. Not only did the blue colourway make the room feel cold, the light floor tiles were a magnet for wheelchair tyre marks.

After just a couple of years, O became frustrated and disheartened with the design, leading her to get in touch with Fine & Able to help.

After

O's new Fine & Able bathroom, a pink metro tiled level access shower area with basin with illuminated mirror above, black taps and tall white storage unit beside.

Our designer completely reworked O’s room to create a totally different feel. What was once an unloved corner has now become a glorious shower area covered in stunning statement tiles.

The enclosure has been perfectly proportioned for O to reverse her shower chair into. She can now reach a handheld shower and manoeuvre using the shower riser with built-in grab rail. A simple shelf adds storage for her shower products at just the right height.

I contacted Fine and Able to update my bathroom as it was not fully fit for purpose for me as a wheelchair user and they were excellent! I worked with Viv the designer, I had a lot of questions and design changes but she was so helpful, always taking the time to answer my questions, even during the installation, and sending me samples. We had video calls to go through the designs and ensure that the bathroom would meet my needs. The process was very smooth and the contractors that were hired to carry out the work were very good. I would definitely recommend using Fine and Able to create your accessible bathroom!

O's review of her experience with Fine & Able

The addition of our tall Hestia unit beside the basin offers sleek storage that hides clutter in a much more useful location. Thanks to an attractive easy-to-hold handle, O is now able to easily reach her essentials whilst getting ready. A large, illuminated LED mirror has created a soft glow and made applying make-up a breeze. Our SurfaceHold basin with integrated hand holds not only makes pulling up underneath more comfortable, it also adds a clever place for a hand towel to be hung close by.

And not forgetting the pink! O was keen to give the room a modern update with a pop of colour and personality. Painting the walls in a pale blush shade and pairing with matt black accents has created a soft and subtle take on the popular monochrome bathroom – creating something both cosy and cool.
